Rare ’80s Nirvana demos surface online

Rare '80s Nirvana demos surface onlineFrank Micelotta/Getty Images A group of rare Nirvana demo recordings from the late '80s have surfaced online thanks to musician John Purkey, who was friends with Kurt Cobain. Purkey recently uploaded four demo tapes that he says Cobain personally gave him onto his YouTube account. One of the tapes includes the famous "Montage of Heck" mix, which provided the name for the Cobain documentary that premiered in 2015. Another demo features early versions of Nevermind songs featuring Chad Channing, who played drums in Nirvana before Dave Grohl joined the band. Luckily, the tapes don't feature any auto-tuned, major key versions of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.
