Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 likens solo tour to "instrumental Alice Cooper show": "It's just so from the heart"

Credit: Rob FennBefore Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson embark on their co-headlining tour this summer, why not catch a live show from the guitarist who played with both shock-rock icons? John 5, who used to play with Manson and currently mans the axe in Zombie’s band, is now touring in support of his upcoming solo album Invasion.

Speaking to ABC Radio, John describes his live show as “like an instrumental Alice Cooper show,” filled with screens playing scenes from horror movies and, of course, lots and lots of shredding.

“I explain to the crowd, I say, ‘I hope I’m not too weird, but this is who I am,'” John says. “I play guitar and I watch horror movies.”

“This is what I’d be doing sitting on the couch, you know?” he laughs.

Shows on the tour have been selling out, which is a pleasant surprise for the guitarist, since he knows instrumental music isn’t exactly popular with mainstream audiences.

“I’m doing this just for the love of guitar,” John says. “It’s a hard sell, instrumental music. But that’s why I’m so happy, because it’s just so from the heart, and people love it.”

Invasion is due out in the summer, and you’ll also hear John 5’s handiwork on the upcoming new Rob Zombie album, the follow-up to 2016’s The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser. John says that the Zombie album is finished, and sounds “wonderful.”

“Me being a fan of Zombie and White Zombie, it’s exactly what I would want if I purchased a Zombie record,” he says. “The melodies are great, the music’s really cool, I’m super, super excited, super happy.”

As for when we’ll get to hear it, John himself isn’t sure yet.

“If you find out, let me know,” he says.
